Home Visiting for Families

Our volunteers visit families weekly offering support, friendship and practical help. As parents you may feel in need of our help for all sorts of reasons. We help:

  • Lonely or isolated parents
  • Families with multiple births or several young children
  • Families where there is ill health or disability or special needs
  • Families who have suffered bereavement
  • Mums who have post-natal depression
  • Families who are new to an area
  • Families from all backgrounds
  • Lone parents

If you have children under the age of 12 years you can register with us - just get in touch by email or telephone using the contact details below.

What happens next?

Initially we'll need to gather some information by phone or email about your family and how we may be able to help.

Then we'll arrange for one of our experienced staff (a volunteer coordinator) to come to your home to meet you, find out more about how we can support your family and answer any questions you may have.  After this the coordinator will arrange to visit again to introduce you to a volunteer from their team who will visit you on a weekly basis and support you throughout your time with Home-Start.

Your Volunteer Coordinator will arrange to visit you every 3 months or so to see how you're getting along.

Our volunteers help by:

  • Giving friendly support through difficult times for as long as is helpful or needed
  • Being flexible -  you decide with your volunteer when visits will happen and how you spend the time
  • Being understanding - Home-Start volunteers are parents themselves
  • Offering reassurance - many parents feel overwhelmed at times, you are not alone.
  • Offering a listening ear, and a shoulder to cry on, if needed
  • Being an extra pair of hands, providing the help and support you need to cope with more than one child if getting out and about is tricky
  • Maintaining confidentiality - information about you and your family is never disclosed to anyone outside Home-Start without your permission (except where a child may be at risk).
  • Only visiting when they're wanted - families have the choice to accept Home-Start support or not.
