About Home-Start Exeter and East Devon

Home-Start makes perfect sense. It’s about one person supporting another, making things a little easier, making a difference that will have a life-long effect. Sometimes the simplest idea is the best and that is how the magic of Home-Start works, by matching one person to another with no strings attached.

Established since June 1986 in Exeter, Home-Start commenced family support throughout East Devon in 2009. We continue, though, to need more supporters as demand for Home-Start support in Exeter and East Devon continues to exceed available resources.  Year on year we support more families; 125 families with 299 children received our support in the year 2014/15.  92% of those families expressed a positive difference in having Home-Start support, thus demonstrating the real benefit Home-Start can bring to family life.

Parents ask for Home-Start's help for all sorts of reasons

They may feel isolated in their community, have no family nearby and be struggling to make friends. They may be finding it hard to cope because of their own or a child's physical or mental illness. They may have been hit hard by the death of a loved one. They may be really struggling with emotional and physical demands of having twins or triplets - perhaps born into an already large family. Whatever the reasons, we know that a little help can make a big difference.

Our approach

Our beliefs

Home-Start believes that children need a happy and secure childhood and that parents play the key role in giving their children a good start in life and helping them to achieve their full potential.

Our mission: To help give children the best possible start in life.

Home-Start Exeter and East Devon supports parents as they grow in confidence, strengthens their relationship with their children and widens their links with the local community.

Home-Start offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children in the local community.  We recruit and train volunteers who are usually parents themselves to visit families with at least one child under twelve and offer them informal, friendly and confidential support.  Our support is free, confidential and non-judgemental.

We help to increase the confidence and independence of families by:

  • Visiting families in their own homes to offer support, friendship and practical assistance
  • Reassuring parents that their childcare problems are not unusual or unique
  • Encouraging parents' strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of their children
  • Trying to get the fun back into family life

Our volunteers, who have parenting experience themselves, can offer:

  • Precious time for listening and talking
  • Help with the children
  • A break for parents
  • Practical help and reassurance
  • A chance to meet other parents in the same boat
  • Support to use local services and resources
