AsOne Theatre Company Autumn Tour 2015 ‘tinderbox’

Award winning AsOne Theatre has created a captivating new show for all the family - ‘tinderbox’ - the most recent offering from its dynamic AsCend ensemble. Touring throughout this autumn the play is a witty re-working of Hans Christian Andersen’s original tale, devised to delight story-lovers of all ages – connecting both the young and young at heart.

The play is directed by its writer and puppet maker, Jacqueline Avery (Weymouth based). ‘tinderbox’ takes us on a thrilling journey with a war-torn soldier meeting  an obstinate princess, a strange wizened woman aided by three unearthly dogs, and a magic tinderbox. Along the way we encounter wave tossed seas, venture deep under a tree, battle whirling snow - to break locks and free true love.  An audio visual treat with a blend of powerful physical storytelling, puppetry and shadow play interwoven by evocative songs and music from talented, Bath based Joe Butcher (ex-Thomas Hardye school); and the popular, quirky animation of Dorset’s Thomas Hughes. The lighting is designed by the very popular James Marshall of Basement Hire, Wimborne.

AsOne Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Jane McKell said: We wanted to bring a contemporary, magical piece of theatre to the stage that unites the extended family, and has them leaving the theatre talking about what has just engaged and excited them. ‘tinderbox’ is a thrilling story with strong, colourful yet vulnerable characters, and themes of adventure, love, loss, and lessons learned. The multi-media way we tell it; the combination of puppets, life music, animated image and talented physical performance adds up to magic for all the family. Our ‘tinderbox’ neither patronises nor over-intellectualises; we laugh and cry- out with the characters in a rollicking adventure.  Director, Jacqueline Avery has cleverly written and directed this show to appeal widely. Jackie said: “I wrote it for my children, husband, parents and grandparents, speaking in some way to each of them”.

In every venue on tour local primary schools, and performing arts Stagecoach and Razzamataz students will participate in a magical lullaby- lantern parade weaving around the auditorium adding something special to each performance. Touring six counties from October to December ‘tinderbox’ will premier at the Corn Exchange in Dorchester on Friday 16th of October touring to 18 venues, concluding 5th of December at Shelley Theatre, Boscombe. The tour includes a performance at Manor Pavilion Theatre, Friday 6th November with a retiring collection in aid of Home Start Exeter and East Devon.
